It covers 137,000 acres - about 214 square miles - of rugged mountain wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) range of the Rocky Mountains in northern New Mexico.  Thirty-four staffed camps and 55 trail camps are operated by the ranch. Philmont has high mountains dominating rough terrain with elevations ranging from 6,500 to 12,441 feet.

In the summer of 2015, Crew 242 will be sending it's first full Crew of 12 to Philmont Scout Ranch.  They will be spending 2014 on various backpacking trips preparing for this adventure!

In 2012 and 2013,the Lincoln-Heritage Council in Kentucky offered a unique local adventure option which included kayaking the Green River, zip-lining, horseback riding and hiking in the Mamouth Cave National Park area.

In the summer of 2013, several members of Crew 242 attended this adventure.

Northern Tier High Adventure Program

Established in 1972, the Northern Tier High Adventure Program operates three distinct bases in the northern wilderness.  The Charles L. Sommers Wilderness Canoe Base in the Minnesota Boundary Waters area; the Don Rogert Canoe Base in the southern Ontario wilderness; and the Northern Expeditions Canoe Base in the Manitoba wilderness.  Since 1923 members of the Boy Scouts of America have been finding high adventure in this canoe area.

In the summer of 2012, Crew 242 sent two Crews to the Donald Rogert Canoe Base to experience the Canadian wilderness of Quetico Provincial Park for a week.  Each crew planned a different route and completed a six day, 65-75 mile trek with up to 16 portages!

Florida Sea Base

Established in 1980, the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base is owned and operated by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America to offer unique educational aquatic programs to our members. Florida Sea Base operated out of three locations, Islamorada and Summerland Key in the beautiful Florida Keys, as well as Marsh Harbour, Great Abaco Island, Bahamas.  The clear waters of the Florida Keys and the Bahamas offer unparalleled opportunities for both small and tall ship sailing, snorkeling, SCUBA, and ocean adventure.

In the summer of 2011, members of Crew 242 joined a second Crew and for a week of SCUBA diving on the coral reefs off the Florida Keys.
