CubScouts advance through five ranks. You don't have to start with Tigers, though.  You'll just join a Den and start earning your rank at the ages shownbelow.

Rank  Grade  or  Age
Tiger 1
Wolf
Bear
Webelos  4 or 5    10 or 11

Bobcat is the first rank that all Cub Scouts must earn.  This is the rank in which a Scout learns the basics of being park of a Cub Scout Pack.  This rank only needs to be earned once, but it is included in every ranks handbook.  To earn this rank, a Scout must memorize the Cub Scout Motto, Oath, and the Law of the Pack as well as demonstrate the Cub Scout handshake, sign and salute.  Additionally, the Scout must know the meaning of Webelos and discuss important safety concerns with their parents.

Tiger Cubs is an exciting introduction to the scouting program for boys who are or 7 and/or in the first grade. Tiger Cubs do stuff - lots of stuff -with their adult partners. The program is intended to open up the world to inquisitive minds with the caring guidance of adults. The first steps along the Boy Scout Trail are completed here and every rank advancement through the scouting program builds on the basic categories of activity done as Tigers.

The Tiger Cub program runs on two levels.Together, the scout and his adult partner complete activities centered around the family. Then, the scout and adult partner meet with the rest of the Tiger Den to fulfill Den Activity and Go See It requirements.

Wolf Scouts are boys who have completed the first grade or are 8 years old. The Wolf Scout brings challenges appropriate to boys at this stage of their growth. Boys receive a Wolf Scout handbook, Wolf neckerchief, and Wolf neckerchief slide when beginning the Wolf portion of the boy scout trail. He will also need a blue Cub Scout Uniform. This part of the boy scout trail is intended to take one school year, preparing the scout to begin earning his Bear rank after he completes second grade.

Bear Scouts are boys who have completed the second grade or are 9 years old, and have earned the Bobcat Badge.  He receives a Bear Scout handbook, Bear neckerchief and neckerchief slide when beginning the Bear portion of the boy scout trail. He will continue to use the blue Cub Scout Uniform. This part of the boy scout trail is intended to take one school year, preparing the scout to begin earning his Webelos rank after he completes third grade.

Webelos is a 20 month program for 4th and 5th grade boys to prepare to join a Boy Scout troop while learning outdoors skills and participating in 20 different activity badges. A well-run group of Webelos is a gradual change from being an 'adult-run' den to being a 'boy-run' patrol ready to fit right into an adventurous scouting troop. This migration requires the parents and den leaders to give the scouts more and more control,decision-making power, and responsibility as they progress in skills, abilities, and maturity. A good program also provides the scouts with many opportunities to grow in the Webelos Virtues.

Webelos Program:

The Webelos program has two major milestones -the Webelos rank badge to be earned around February of 4th grade and the Arrow of Light to be earned around February of 5th grade. The final part of Webelos is bridging over into a Boy Scout troop selected individually by the scout.

Webelos Uniform:

During the Scout's first year as a Webelos, he will continue to wear his blue Cub Scout Uniform.  Hereceives a Webeelos Scout handbook and Webelos neckerchief and neckerchief slide.

During the Webelos second year, he will graduate to the tan Boy Scout Uniform with blue epaulets.  This signifies that he will soon be a Boy Scout.
