Tent Policy

Troop 776 strives to help every scout find their own way and to maintain a personal storage of essential camping equipment.  There is nothing more essential than shelter.  Troop 776 generally attempts to camp year around on a monthly basis.  Acquiring and maintaining working equipment is a key opportunity for developing scouts to practice the principles of the personal management merit badge (A requirement for the Eagle Rank).  The troop generally provides for the scout in their first year; however, Moving forward the Scout needs to plan on purchasing his own tent and needs to be encouraged to be have this by or upon making First Class Rank.

The troop will be incorporating more backpacking adventures so we feel compelled to set a standard for the tent's that we expect the scout to acquire.  This is about the weight of the tent, which along with all other supplies, will need to be hiked in and out on these excursions.  Weight matters.

The minimum Tent requirement is a backpacking style 2 person tent (no bigger/no smaller).  This will accommodate the scout and his gear.

The current tents required by the troop are:

1) Eureka Apex 2 xt

 or

2) Kelty Acadia 2

Note that these are entry level tents and there are other manufacturors; however, before purchasing the scout must seek approval by SPL and a scoutmaster.  There are models with better features and made with lighter materials offered by these manufacturers.  Please note however, the better tents go up in cost, not down.

Thank you
