Join Our Troop

If you are interested in joining Troop 284, we would love to talk with you. You can email us at jlund@kansas.net, or you can come by our meetings Monday night at the College Ave United Methodist Church (7:00 PM). We occasionally cancel a meeting after a long trip, or when we are at Summer Camp, so it is good to email us to make sure we know you are coming.

To join our Troop, your son must complete the Boy Scouts Joining Requirements. We also charge a $75 membership fee to join our Troop for the year (there are also separate monthly dues of $7).

These are the Boy Scout Joining Requirements:

1) Meet the age requirements. Be a boy who is 11 years old, or one who has completed the fifth grade or earned the Arrow of Light Award and is at least 10 years old, but is not yet 18 years old.

2) Find a Scout troop near your home.

3) Complete a Boy Scout application and health history signed by your parent or guardian.

4) Repeat the Pledge of Allegiance.

5) Demonstrate the Scout sign, salute, and handshake.

6) Demonstrate tying the square knot (a joining knot).

7) Understand and agree to live by the Scout Oath, Scout Law, motto, and slogan, and the Outdoor Code.

8) Describe the Scout badge.

9) Complete the pamphlet exercises. With your parent or guardian, complete the exercises in the pamphlet How to Protect Your Children From Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide.

10) Participate in a Scoutmaster conference. Turn in your Boy Scout application and health history form signed by your parent or guardian, then participate in a Scoutmaster conference.

Online versions of the Boy Scout Application, the Health History, and the Pamphlet about Child Abuse are available at the links below, or they can be downloaded from the attachements here. Hard copies are usually available at meetings.

The other skills are included in the Boy Scout Handbook (included as part of the membership fee). The link below for the Joining Requirements Checklist also has the skills needed. They will also be taught to your son by other scouts at the meeting.

There is a link and flier attached for the local scout shop that carries Boy Scout Uniforms. Talk to the leaders before you buy the uniforms, since Troop 386 provides some of the items listed.
