Boys of this age are a special group.  They like almost anything that causes them to be dirty or learn something new in an active way.  Schools tend to make them sit and look at a board all day long.  Let's give them something different.  You can never go wrong by taking your den on a hike, playing a game outside, or taking a field trip to a special place.  Look at the Cub Scout Handbook and ask yourself, "If I were 8 (or 10 or whatever) how would I want to complete my achievements?  Sit and learn?  Or move around and experience?"

When starting any new job, one of the first things that your new company will do is make sure you understand your responsibilities and how best to perform them.  The BSA follows that same path.  Much of your initial training is done online and at your own pace.

Many (if not all) of Scouting's adult volunteers are active with a Pack or Troop because: A, they have a boy involved and want to spend time with them. B, they were involved as a youth and want to give back. or C, they HAD a boy involved and stayed around because they love it so much!  Many of us don't expect any recognition for our work unless it's a heartfelt "Thank You". 

But...

You SHOULD be recognized for your dedication and effort to provide a FUN, SAFE, and MEMORABLE experience for the Scouts your lead.  One way the BSA recognizes it's leaders is to award them with square knot patches that show the types of training taken or accomplishments via involvement in the program.
