Cub Scout Values

The qualities we admire in adults are generally learned early in life.  The Cub Scout program is designed to promote character development in boys ages 6-10 by focusing on 12 core values:

  • Citizenship
  • Compassion
  • Cooperation
  • Courage
  • Faith
  • Health/Fitness
  • Honesty
  • Perserverance
  • Positive Attitude
  • Resourcefulness
  • Respect
  • Responsibility

By weaving these values into FUN and educational activities, Cub Scouting helps boys grow-up to be self-reliant, dependable, and caring men.

Principals of Cub Scouting

Cub Scouting Ideals
Apart from the fun and excitement of Cub Scout activities, the Cub Scout Promise, the Law of the Pack, and the Cub Scout sign, handshake, motto, and salute all teach good citizenship and contribute to a boy’s sense of belonging.

Scout Oath
On my honor, I will do my best. To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.

Cub Scout Motto
Do Your Best

Scout Law
A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent.

Colors
The Cub Scout colors are blue and gold.
Blue stands for truth and spirituality, steadfast loyalty, and the sky above.
Gold stands for warm sunlight, good cheer, and happiness.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How old (or young) can a boy be to join Cub Scouting?

Cub Scouting is for boys in the first through fifth grades, or 6 to 10 years of age. Boys who are older than 10, or who have completed the fifth grade, can no longer join Cub Scouting but they may be eligible to join the Boy Scouting or Venturing program.

How often do Cub Scouts meet?

Cub Scouts meet in their dens one to two times a month, and a pack meeting is held for all Cub Scouts and their families once a month. A den may hold a special activity, such as a service project or visit to a local museum, in place of one of their regular meetings or in addition to the regular meetings. Likewise, the pack may conduct a special event - such as Scouting for Food - as an additional activity rather than a substitute for its monthly pack meeting.

How are parents involved?

Cub Scouting is a family program.  Parents or a responsible adult accompany their scouts to most events and use this time to create lasting memories.  Our pack has a good balance of moms, dads and siblings participating as their schedules allow.  All camping for the pack is family camping and siblings are welcome and encouraged.

Parents are encouraged to use their talents to help the pack in whatever way they are comfortable.  Parents who want to become more involved can become den leaders, assistant den leaders, committee members or volunteer to help set up or clean up events.  Parents can arrange for tours of their places of work, or help scouts learn about a hobby of theirs (such as wildlife watching).  There are lots of big and small ways to become involved.

What supplies and equipment are needed to participate in Cub Scouting?

At minimum, each boy in Cub Scouting will need a uniform and a handbook. Each year, the handbook changes, as does the cap and neckerchief, but other uniform parts remain the same for the first three years. When a boy enters a Webelos den, he will need to obtain a new khaki-and-olive uniform.

Additional supplies and equipment may be needed for certain activities such as camping trips or field days. Den and pack leaders will provide parents with information about any supplies that will be required at the beginning of each program year.

Does the Scouting Program affect participation in other activities?

The Cub Scout program is designed to compliment many other extracurricular activities. Typical time commitment is two Den meetings and one Pack meeting per month. Boys who participate in organized sports like soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming, gymnastics, etc, or academic-based extracurricular activities like music, art, science etc., can be recognized for these activities though Cub Scout belt loops and pins which are worn on their uniform.

Do Cub Scouts go camping?

YES! Our pack has two overnight family camp outs during the scouting year, one in the fall and one in the spring. We participate in the Riverside District Campout at Wickham Park in the Fall, and go to Disney's Fort Wilderness as a pack in the Spring. Both campouts are lots of fun for the whole family and are great ways to get to know the other scouting parents and their families.
