2016-2017 Dress Drive

After two years and an amazing amount of books that were donated from and to the community to promote reading and family time to families and young children. The Scouts gave back over 2000 books in two years that were all donated by our community.

This year during the girl scout camp it was determined by the adult volunteers and cadetts that a dress drive to help all young ladies in Union county have the opportunity to go to the high-school prom without worry of cost. The girls are going to work together to come up with plans to help make this community project possible. Stay Tuned!

Book Drive:  WBCU Radio Station & DAILY TIMES will publish the locations of our collection boxes. If you can please let me know by October 15th 2015 where your box is located that would be a great help. Simply get permission from your church, hair salon, favorite store, bank will gain recognition for participating in this Girl Scout community project.  Don’t forget to sort through books that your child has outgrown. This is a great way for us to teach the children how to share with others. & Promote Family Time! We collect these books and pass them out to under 5 children at the holiday parades. Our Goal is to collect 1000 Books (We have received about 100 that have come in)

Fall Book Drive Goal 1,000 Books

Last year we collected over 600 Books from community members of Union County.
This year we would like to exceed that and have plenty of Books to pass out to the young children in attendance of the holiday parades.

Different ways to participate

Decorate & Place A Box - At your school, church, hair salon, favorite restaurant, stores.
Simply call and ask if you can place a box leave your # and ask them to notify you once it gets full or close to full so you can come and collect the books leave the box until pretty much last minute of the parades if possible but keep them emptied out.. (leave a book behind to spark attention)

Collect Books- Ask your friends, family, teammates, to donate any gently used children books they might have for children 5 and under.

Phone Calls- Making phone calls to various large businesses to see if they will allow a book box for collection from their employees or their company.

Passing out the books- This is very important the parade moves slow when watching it but when trying to pass out books it moves very quickly we will-need many adults and scouts to help make sure all young children receive a book.

2014

On September 19th the idea of a Book drive to assist on helping some scouts earn a star for a community service project was discussed among other ideas such as a spring community garden, raise donations for a local pet shelter, hosting a kids night out. All of the ideas were agreed upon and we will be working on all of them in the months to come.

The girl scouts then left the meeting to ponder ideas of how to make the book drive successful and to return to our meeting on October 11th. At that time the girls helped decorate additional boxes to be placed throughout the community. The girls came up with the ideas of the schools and their churches. A few of the scouts personally delivered all of the boxes to the locations. They set a goal based on 15-25 books per girl scout 195-325 books and as the collection continues as of 12/3/14 the count is at 383 Books. The day of the union parade we had collected another 120+ Books making our count to just over 500. We also passed out 300 Bookmarks.

The media was notified and an online campaign began as well. The books are being rounded up and the girls will soon be passing out these books at our local parades to help promote. #GIVING #Reading #Literacy.

In the near future the girls will meet up again and report their collected data. The girls will learn how to chart and analyze data. They will work as a team and collaborate on ideas of how they can make the 2015 Fall Book Drive a bigger success. They will be more hands on with the media with a possible studio appearance.. In addition they will set new goals and have data to share with the schools and churches that participated so that they can see how they helped. Now that they have factual data that they have analyzed they can set a goal for each location to have a 20% increase. In the fall of 2015 They will put there plans and ideas into action.

Look at all those boxes of books!!! We had 387 before parade day and scouts
showed up with bags and boxes of more books. We added about 100 more books to our book drive collection efforts. & We have more being collected for the upcoming parades.

Passing out the books.. All hands on deck for next time we pass out books. It was a bit tricky we did our best to reach every visible child. (Brownies & Daisys are not permitted to walk the streets passing out books but they had a great time tossing candy)

We were able to get permission granted by the district office to place
boxes at the other schools between now and the last day before school goes on break.
We hope this will help us collect enough books to give to all young children.
