How much does Cub Scouts Cost?

Pack 1831 is funded through membership dues, fundraising, and the occasional contribution of crafting supplies by leaders and parents when needed.

Membership Dues account for about a third to one half of our annual budget, are collected twice per year, and typically pay for the following items.

  • Recognition Patches, Belt loops, Pins, and other Awards
  • National, Council, and District Registration & Fees for BSA
  • BSA Insurance Coverage
  • Hikes (Park Fees, First Aid Kit, etc.)

Fall dues are announced in September and due before the Rocket Launch in October; Spring dues are announced in December and due before the Pinewood Derby in January.   Most years our dues equate to about $12 per scout per month, assuming fundraising goes well and expenses stay within budget. Spring dues are typically waived for scouts who meet or exceed the fundraising goal established for that purpose in the fall. Pack 1831 dues for 2018 are $120 per scout payable as $60 by the October Pack meeting and $60 payable by January Pinewood Derby check in. A Scout with unpaid dues will be unable to participate in the Pinewood Derby.

Fundraising accounts for about half to two-thirds of our annual budget and covers the cost of the following activities.

  • Pack Family Campouts (campground fees & supplies only, not food)
  • Rocket Launch & Rocket Kit
  • Greater Manassas Area Christmas Parade Float & Entrance Fee
  • Pinewood Derby & Car Kit
  • Blue & Gold Banquet (Entertainment & supplies only, not food)
  • Rainwater/Recycle Regatta
  • Summer Scouting (some events may require an admission fee)

We typically organize 2-4 fundraising events each year, depending upon their success.  Fundraising goals are established, prizes are awarded, and scouts who meet or exceed an established threshold for the Fall Fundraiser have their Spring dues waived. Also, for those families who do not wish to fundraise we establish an opt-out fee that can be paid instead.

Our fundraising efforts are usually similar to the following.

Fall: Scout Popcorn
Winter: Camp Cards
Spring: Yard Sale

Volunteers are always needed to help with fundraising, please let us know if you are interested in helping out!
